About Lake Mahopac

One of New York's most beautiful, small lakes

Less than 50 miles north of New York City, picturesque Lake Mahopac is one of the few Putnam County waterbodies that is accessible to the public and is not part of the NYC watershed. It is surrounded by the hamlet of Mahopac, home to dozens of restaurants, theaters, shops, parks, and museums.

The 585-acre lake is perfect for waterskiing, wakeboarding, or casual cruising in search of wildlife and scenery. It contains three, privately-owned islands, Fairy, Petre, and Canopus. Fairy Island sports multiple homes accessible via a short causeway; Petra boasts the Massaro House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residence, and a Wright-designed bungalow, the A. K. Chahroudi Cottage.

With over six miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 62 feet, and a mean depth of 28 feet, Lake Mahopac is home to several species of game fish, including Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Rock Bass, Black Crappie, Pumpkinseed, Bluegill, Redbreast Sunfish, Yellow Perch, and Brown Bullhead.
